Sarah Ishmael, Doctoral Candidate and co-author of “The Fire” in the book Teaching While the World is on Fire, says that Madison is not a place that you can rest at a Black person. In this episode of Black Oxygen, we discuss the structural and atmospheric nature of racism, the inherit wisdom and education of BIPOC students, and the role that books and reading play in creating a place of sanctuary. We also discuss some of the structural changes needed in Madison, WI that will be necessary for Black folks to be able to breathe more fully.
